Southwest from the end of the Pier.
A sailboat emerges from the mouth of the Orwell passing the unsightly gravel extraction operation at Landguard Point.
The fort is just visible to the right before becoming obscured again by the imposing Manor Club - a favourite social venue of the era.
A third of the way along the beach towards us is a building with what appears to be a control tower atop. It is a control tower - crowning the Coastguard station at Wireless Green. A bit closer is the Ferris Wheel of Mannings Amusements. The business survives having been passed down through the family, the wheel -alas- does not .
Note also, just right of centre and a hundred yards offshore, people
standing on the swimming pontoon that was permanently moored here.
