Charing Cross.
When Edward I's wife, Eleanor of Castile, died at Harby in Nottinghamshire in 1290 he had crosses erected at the 12 places where the funeral cortege had rested on its way to Westminster Abbey. This was the last cross.
The cross that is still standing there now, was made in 1863, a replica of the original.
All distances from London are measured from this point.
